Abstract
470,631. Gas-blast switches. BRITISH THOMSON - HOUSTON CO., Ltd. April 13, 1937, No. 10515. Convention date, April 15, 1936. [Class 38 (v)] In a circuit-breaker employing an arc-extinguishing tubular chamber 3 having walls formed of, or lined with a solid material capable of developing extinguishing gas due to the heat of the arc produced within the chamber during the separating movement through the chamber of a movable contact 7 when moving away from a fixed contact 6, located at or near one end of the chamber, and wherein the movable contact enters through the other end of the chamber, a compartment 4 is formed in the latter between two separated parts 1, 2 of said walls, the portion 1 being located near contact 6 and of a length sufficient to ensure extinction of a current of given magnitude by the time the contact 7 has receded into the compartment 4, whereas the other part 2 is located nearer to the entry end for the contact 7 and arranged to combine with the part 1 for taking part in the extinction of a current of lower magnitude. The compartment 4 communicates to atmosphere or its equivalent, as by a byepass 8 in which may be a pressure-relief valve. The wall portion 1 preferably comprises a number of superposed plates spaced apart by distance rings. An insulating filling piece 8 is provided.
