Abstract
537,482. Gas-blast switches. REYROLLE & CO., Ltd., COATES, F., and ALLAN, A. Dec. 21, 1939, No. 32674. Drawings to Specification. [Class 38 (v)] In a gas-blast switch of the kind in which a de-ionizing blast is forced under pressure through the arc by the heating effect of a second are in series with the main arc, gas is fed under pressure to the series arc by means of a piston orlike member which is either carried by one of the movable contacts or otherwise operated during the opening movement. The invention enables low breaking current arcs to be successfully put out as, instead of the low heat of the series arc acting on the pre-existing volume of gas in its enclosure a continuous stream of gas is supplied to the enclosure to be heated while the arc lasts and thus a relatively large blast is obtained. The invention is illustrated in its application to certain of the constructions shown in Specification 516,238, other features of which are also applicable to the present invention.
