553,092. Gas-blast switches. REYROLLE & CO., Ltd., A., and AMER, D. F. Sept. 25, 1941, No. 5673/43. Divided out of 553,063. [Class 38 (v)] A gas-blast switch comprises a conducting nozzle or vent through which the blast flows, at least three contacts connected to the terminal of the switch, two of which serve as arc-initiating contacts and are separable on the highpressure side of the nozzle and in a direction transverse to the blast, two other arcing contacts being provided to which the arc is transferred by the blast, of which one is on the high-pressure side of the nozzle (and may be constituted by one of the arc-initiating contacts), the arc extending through the nozzle into engagement with the second arcing contact on the low-pressure side of the nozzle, and an auxiliary electrode on the low-pressure side connected through a resistance to the contact on the high-pressure side. When the movable contact D is withdrawn from the fixed contact C under the blast-pressure, the arc drawn is blown through an aperture B in a conducting disc B<SP>1</SP> so as to extend between the movable contact D and an arcing contact E in connection with the fixed contact C. A resistance F<SP>2</SP> is connected between the movable contact D and an auxiliary electrode F, the function of which is to cause any reignition of the arc to occur between the auxiliary electrode and arcing contact E. In a modification, Fig. 3, the disc J', arcing contact K, and auxiliary electrode L are in a lateral branch of the main casing A containing the movable contact H<SP>2</SP> which is adapted to bridge contacts H, H<SP>1</SP> in the closed position. The resistance L<SP>1</SP> is arranged between the support G' and insulating lining G of the branch. The Provisional Specification refers to other modifications in details.
