Abstract
843,031. Fluid-blast switches. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. Jan. 13, 1958 [Jan. 22, 1957], No. 1132/58. Class 38 (5). A switch comprises a single bushing 40 having a terminal stud 42 extending therethrough, a pair of series connected arcextinguishing units 2 disposed at the ends of the bushing, each unit including separable contacts and means for establishing a fluid-blast, circuit means shunting the units and an earthed structure supporting the intermediate portion of the bushing. Fig. 1 illustrates the arrangement of the arc extinguishing units, each of which comprises a cylinder 22 containing a fixed guide plate 25 and a piston 21 with an orifice member 23 secured by a pin-connection 20 to a contact 18 coupled by linkage 29, 31 to a solenoid or hydraulic operating devide 37. Each contact 18 co-operates with a fixed contact 13 carried by closure plates 11 at the outer ends of weather-proof insulating casings 3. When the contacts are opened the movement of the pistons 21 towards the plates 25 forces fluid from the spaces 26 through the orifices 23 to extinguish the arcs drawn. Fig. 2 shows how the arc-extinguishing units are shunted by the circuit means which comprise impedances 62 in series with a pair of residual current interrupting units 63. Each unit 63 comprises a fixed contact 64 and a movable contact 68 secured to a cylinder 70 which may be moved about a fixed piston 75 by linkage 73, 77, 87 by the operating device 37. The contacts 64, 68 are opened after the main contacts 13, 18, the movement of the cylinder 70 forcing fluid through nozzles 71 to extinguish the residual current arcs. The fluid may be a liquid or a gas such as sulphur hexafluoride. Current transformers 41 surround the intermediate portion of the bushing 40. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 736,090.
