Abstract

1422997 Gas blast switches WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 20 March 1973 [31 March 1972] 13310/73 Heading H1N A compressed gas high voltage switch comprises a metal tank 2, into which extends a pair of terminal bushings 4, 5, and an arc extinguishing unit including a pair of separable contact structures each one of which is at least partially supported by the interior end of a respective one of the terminal bushings, and a pair of high pressure gas reservoirs 12, 13 each one of which is also supported by the interior end of a respective one of the terminal bushings adjacent the respective separable contact structure. The metal tank 2 is supported by a hollow insulating column 3 containing a central rod 16 which is rotatable to operate firstly the linkages 10 to open and close the contacts 6, 8, and secondly a cam and follower 40b, 43 to operate a blast valve 30. Current is carried between moving contacts 8 and 9 by plate 60 via fingers 58. The gas, which is sulphur hexafluoride, is exhausted into the the metal tank 2 during arc interruption and is recycled via compressor 74. The blast valve 30 is operated by a piston and cylinder arrangement 50, 51, when a pilot valve 34 is opened by links connected to the cam 40b.
