Abstract

553,063. Gas-blast switches. REYROLLE & CO., Ltd., A., and AMER, D. F. Sept. 25, 1941, No. 12449. [Class 38 (v)] A gas-blast switch capable of carrying large loads whilst having a relatively small nozzle or vent through which the blast is discharged, comprises a contact E in the form of inwardly spring-pressed fingers carried on a fluid-actuated piston E' and normally bridging a tubular contact D and a metal nozzle contact B, and metal cylinder B<SP>1</SP> connected to the terminal B'. When opening circuit, the arc drawn between D, E is transferred to the end C<SP>1</SP> of a rod C carried within and by tube D, and also through the nozzle B to a contact B<SP>5</SP>, if such is provided. A further electrode F is connected through resistance F<SP>2</SP> to the contact C' and receives one of the roots of the arc if the latter restrikes. The arrangement C, D may be replaced by a simple rod or tube serving as both arc-initiating and arcing contacts. Specification 542,728 is referred to.
