Abstract
443,187. Air-blast switches. BRITISH THOMSON - HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. Sept. 5, 1935, No. ' 24796. Convention date, Sept. 15, 1934. [Class 38 (v)] An air-break switch has a fixed contact 10 accommodated in an extinguishing chamber 5 which is filled solely with air and provided with a tubular insulating extension 12 closely surrounding the movable rod contact 6 which is completely withdrawn from the tube 12 for effecting the circuit interruption. The arrangement is such that in opening circuit, an arc is drawn in the tube 12 and chamber 5 which sets up a pressure which is only relieved when 6 leaves 12, followed by a blast of gas. The clearance between 6, 12 is preferably one millimeter, and 12 is preferably of hard rubber or other material which evaporates under the action of the arc without leaving any substantial residue. Fig. 1 shows a sliding isolating power switch, the " open " condition of which is readily visible, having the extension of contact 6 formed as a guide rod 7 operated by a pivoted insulator 4 and link 8. Chamber 5 is of metal which tightly encloses a number of centrally apertured discs 10 held in position by a spiral spring 11 and forming the fixed contact.
