Abstract

388,613. Oil-break switches. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London.-(Assignees of Prince, D. C. ; 1424, Wendell Avenue, Schenectady, and Turnpenny, W.; 12c, Wilkins Avenue, Albany, both in New York, U.S.A.) May 19, 1932, No. 14293. Convention date, May 19, 1931. [Class 38 (v).] A multiple-break high-tension circuit-breaker of the self-generated oil-blast type has an oilfilled housing comprised of two identical insulating tubes 1, 2 connected to a flanged coupling member 3, supported on an insulator 4. An insulating partition 40 divides the housing into two compartments in the lower of which are situated a set of contacts connected in series by flexible conductors between line terminals 5, 6. Pairs of main contacts such as 13, 14 are mounted in insulating tubes 47 connected to relief openings in the partition 40 while other pairs of contacts such as 9, 10 are situated between the main pairs and remote from the relief openings. All the movable contacts such as 10, 14 are mounted on insulating cross bars 37 slidable on a pair of operating rods 35 which extend along the sides 'of both tubes 1, 2. Springs are threaded on the rods 35 so as to bias the contacts to the closed position and sleeves on the rods engage the cross bars, when the rods are moved to the right, to separate the contacts. The actuating mechanism comprises an insulating rod 22 .which passes up the insulator 4 and is connected to a rod 25 having a collar 27 and compression spring 29 at its upper end. A crank 30 pivoted at 31 to the casing, is pivoted at 32 to the actuating-rod 22 and is connected at 34 to the operating rods 35. In the position shown the circuit is closed. On release of the rod 22 it moves upwards under the action of spring 29 thus turning the crank 30 anticlockwise and moving the operating rods 35 to the -right to open the circuit. The arcs formed at pairs of contacts such as 9, 10 generate pressure causing oil to be forced up through the relief openings past contacts such as 13, 14 and thus extinguish the arc. This happens simultaneously at all pairs of contacts. A chamber 56, filled with pebbles and provided with a perforated lid, allows gas to escape and minimizes oil throw. Specification 193,136, [Class 38 (v), Electric switches &c.], is referred to.
