Abstract

483,889. Heavy - current switches. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. May 29, 1937, No. 14967. Convention date, May 29, 1936. [Class 38 (v)] A circuit-breaker comprises a substantially gas-tight compression chamber 12 having walls of pressure-resistant material, as steel, surrounding a pair of relatively-movable contacts 21, 23, and an annular gas-evolving member 20 disposed within the chamber adjacent the point of separation of the contacts, and formed of a material capable of evolving substantial quantities of gas when exposed to an arc. The members 20 is positioned between annular spacers 19 of steel or other heatresisting material which does not evolve gas in quantities. The spacers 19 engage annular members 15, between which and the bushings 13 of moulded insulation are sealing washers 16, 17 and a guard 18, preferably of soft copper. Peripheral parts 14 on the bushings 13 provide a tight seal between the latter and the chamber 12. To protect the bushings 13 from the arc, the members 15 are of heat-resisting material and have extensions 24 closely fitting the contacts 21, 23. A suitable material for member 20, and preferably also for members 15, is kerosene-free fibre, preferably made from cotton cellulose treated with zinc chloride which is later washed out until less than 0À02 per cent remains. The movable contact 23 is reciprocally moved into and out of contact with 21 by mechanism of the character disclosed in Specification 450,012. Specification 420,042 also is referred to.
