Abstract

470,521. Arc-rupturing in switches. LEYHAUSEN, W. May 4, 1936, No. 12542. Convention date, May 3, 1935. [Class 38 (v)] A spark-chamber for automatic cut-outs with magnetic spark-extinguishing of the kind provided with an outlet opening for the arcing on switching off, is provided towards the centre of the blow-out field with a fresh air supply bore terminating between the contacts and through which the air is drawn by the vacuum resulting from the blowing of the arc and is drawn further through the chamber in the direction of the arc movement. The arcs o, o<1> formed in the chamber f when the movable bridging contact c is separated from the fixed contacts a, b, are acted on by the blow-out fields of magnets m, m<1>, Fig. 2, so that a partial vacuum is produced in the contact-space. Fresh air is thereby drawn into the chamber f through the bore i, space k in the base, channels r, t in the underside of chamber f, and through the openings in the chamber around the contacts a, b, and is then driven outwards with the arcs. Partition walls w, w<1> provide channels n... n<3> and orifices for cooling the gases which can then discharge into the switch case without doing damage. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, states that a further improvement could be obtained by inserting additional walls longitudinally in the chamber, in which case the channels n &c., might be omitted. Figures of performance were given for two different blow-out magnets, one with and the other without, the longitudinally-arranged walls. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
