Abstract
553,472. Gas-blast switches. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. May 27, 1942, No. 7195. Convention date, May 28, 1941. [Class 38 (v)] In order to minimize the emission of flame from the exhaust of gas-blast switches and especially those in which additionally a gasevolving insulating material such as hard fibre or urea or methylmethacrylate resin is placed adjacent the arc, an auxiliary supply of fresh air is fed directly into the exhaust chamber beyond the arcing region, whereby combustion and cooling of inflammable gases is confined to that chamber. In the application to the switch of Specification 544,017, having fixed and movable contacts 3, 4, an arc chute 5 with diverging passages and cooling metal plates 12, and an exhaust chamber 13 with metal cooling plates 26, a pipe 23 leading from the main blast pipe 8 supplies the exhaust chamber 13 directly through an adjustable nozzle 24 and metal baffles 25 ensure thorough mixing and cooling of the gases. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), air is induced from outside by suction through a series of inclined tubes opening in the chamber 13 in the direction of flow of the blast. Specifications 432,535 and 517,984 also are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 referred also to carbon-dioxide as blastmedium, and to axial-blasts. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
