826,463. Gas-blast switches. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO. Ltd. Feb. 16, 1956 [Feb. 23, 1955; Nov. 10, 1955], Nos. 5481/55 and 32221/55. Class 38 (5). In an air or gas blast circuit-breaker having a resistance 28 connected by means of a series gap in parallel with the circuit interrupting contacts 11, 14, a chamber 34, within which the electrodes 31, 32 are positioned, is subject to a reduction in pressure in response to the flow of air or gas during opening of the contacts 11, 14 to facilitate breakdown of the series gap. The arrangement shown is that of Specification 762,988 with the addition of an ejector 102 having an inlet port connected by a pipe 100 to the chamber 34, a venturi 103 connected by a pipe 104 to the contact chamber 1 and a discharge port 106 connected by a pipe 107 to the main discharge passage 21 of the circuit-breaker. When the pressure air or gas is applied to the chamber 1 to open the contacts 11, 14, the pressure air or gas flows through the ejector and entrains air from the chamber 34 to reduce the pressure in the chamber 34 substantially below atmospheric pressure to facilitate the breakdown of the gap. When the flow of the blast gas ceases due to an exhaust valve piston 23 closing ports 22 as described in the Specification referred to above, the pressure in the chamber 1 is applied to the chamber 34 to increase the dielectric strength and facilitate interruption of the resistor current. In an alternative construction, Fig. 2 (not shown), the pipe 100 is connected to a double venturi arrangement disposed in the main discharge passage 21. Fig. 1 (Complete) (not shown) illustrates a construction in which the piston 23 is omitted and the chamber 34 is connected to the passage 21 at a throat of Venturi form.
