Abstract
625,236. Gas-blast switches. ETABLISSEMENTS MERLIN & GERIN. July 7, 1947, No. 17850. Convention date, March 25, 1939. [Class 38(v)] The arc drawn between contacts 1, 3, of a circuit-breaker is extinguished by a number of axial gas blasts which join to form a single isolating space between the open contacts. In Fig. 1, the gas is supplied through a pipe 11 to passages 12 in slabs 8-8<SP>2</SP>, passes through rings 13 and exhausts through passages 14 in slabs 9-9<SP>2</SP>. The rings 13 may be of insulating material or of metal, in which case the adjacent rings on either side of each passage 14 may be electrically interconnected. The passages 14 contain partitions 15 ensuring the expansion and cooling of the exhaust gases. In a modification, Fig. 4, gas is supplied at 31 and exhausts from above and below a plate 24 through a vent 14<SP>1</SP> in the latter; some of the gas also passes out through the contact 1 to chimney 22. The last remnants of ionized fas ass out through vents 34, 35, when contact 3 moves below the top of the tube 26.
