412,403. Arc-rupturing in switches. AKT.-GES. BROWN, BOVERI, ET CIE, Baden, Switzerland. June 1, 1933, No. 15921. Convention date, July 11, 1932. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Dec. 2, 1934.] [Class 38 (v).] Pneumatic blow-out8 ; contacts.-A contact for a heavy-current switch comprises concentric cylinders c<1>, c<2> interconnected by an end piece g, and having a metal disc e closing the annular space between them, serving also as an arcing ring. To minimize electrodynamic repulsive forces, spring-urged segments d are arranged in the annular space so as to subdivide the total current. The contact part c<1> may be traversed by a gas or liquid blast for blowing out the arc, for which purpose it extends nearly to the plane of contact f between the segments and contact b, the main part of the segments being also protected against damage by the arc by the wall c<1>. Since it is desirable to keep the arc root within the structure, the disc e may be of insulation, which may be extended (Fig. 2) outside the wall c<2> to protect the latter from possible damage by the arc. The cylinder c<1> and aperture in e<2> may be of nozzle-form to assist the extinguishing action.
