Abstract
414,491. Heavy-current switches. AKT.-GES. BROWN, BOVERI, ET CIE, Baden, Switzerland. June 1, 1933, Nos. 15918 and 15919. Convention dates, June 1, 1932. [Class 38 (v).] Arc-rupturing devices.- An explosion chamber for liquid-immersed switches having a fixed contact in the end of the chamber and a pressure-relieving valve, is arranged so that the arc is formed within a nozzle which is closed by the valve at that end which is in the end of the chamber and has a tapered opening at that end which projects into the chamber. The nozzle may contain the fixed contact or may form the fixed contact, the arc then forming on the inner surface of the nozzle. The explosion pot a contains a number of baffles i into apertures k in which the movable contact fits closely. The fixed contact e is urged in the contact-making direction by a spring g and is located in a nozzle h of insulation or insulation-covered metal. The opening in the upper part of the nozzle is closed normally by a plate d under the action of springs f, so that when the maximum allowable pressure is exceeded, the arc is enveloped by gases flowing out of the chamber. The blow-out effect is enhanced by the baffles i which concentrate the gas-stream, but in Fig. 1 (not shown) the baffles are dispensed with. The Specification refers also to other constructions of fixed contacts, including a hollow one with openings at the blow-out end normally closed by a valve. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 contained also (1) the constructions forming the subject of Specification 412,403, and (2) a construction using transverse baffles which are thickened at the orifices. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
