Abstract
370,385. Oil-break switches. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC & MANUFACTURING CO., East Pittsburg, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Dyer, L. W. ; 2324, Braddock Avenue, Swissvale, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.) Dec. 3, 1930, No. 36439. Convention date, April 4. [Class 38 (v).] Arc-rupturing devices.-The arc drawn on opening an oil or other liquid-break switch is deionized by means of a structure comprising spaced, circular insulating plates 14 of moulded asbestos or fibre provided with aligned central apertures 17 of less than 22 millimetres diameter, through which the movable bridging contacts 8, 9 draw the arcs. The films of oil remaining on the peripheries of the holes 17 provide the deionizing gases, as described in Specification 368,805. The deionizing effect can be increased by employing a set 18 of three plates, in which case the middle one 20 of each set 18 may be of larger diameter to provide a pocket 21 in which oil is trapped. Radially-arranged vertical plates 24 separate the sets of plates to cool and further deionize the gases that are driven from the arc and to prevent the oil from being driven away. Pneumatic blow-outs.-In Fig. 7, each of the units 18 that are spaced along the arc-path has an annular trough 26 into which lead radiallyarranged tubes 27 through which deionizing powder, liquid, or gas may be supplied to the arc automatically when the contacts separate.
