Abstract

402,927. Liquid-break switches. INTERNATIONAL GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Inc., 120, Broadway, New York, U.S.A.- (Assignees of Allgemeine Elektricitats-Ges. ; 2, Friedrich Karl-Ufer, Berlin.) Oct. 27, 1932, No. 30181. Convention date, Oct. 27, 1931. [Class 38 (v).] In a liquid-break switch of the type having an extinguishing chamber containing the fixed contact surrounded by an outer expansion chamber the movable contact rod passing through both chambers in engaging the fixed contact, in order to economise space between phases and obviate an excessively long movement of the switching rod while retaining a relatively large volume of the expansion chamber, the axes of the extinguishing and expansion chambers are arranged to be inclined with respect to one another. As shown in Fig. 1 the switch rod e enters a hole in the side of the expansion chamber c and passes through an aperture f in the extinguishing chamber b to engage the fixed contact d. The axes of the two chambers are inclined to one another but the outlet orifice f of the extinguishing chamber is arranged to be substantially parallel to the axis of the expansion chamber so that on break the stream of gases produced in the extinguishing chamber follows out in the direction of the axis of the chamber c. Alternatively (Fig. 2) an outlet orifice h similarly inclined may be arranged to be uncovered by the switch rod before leaving the extinguishing chamber. In a further modification (Fig. 3, not shown) the extinguishing chamber b has a vertical axis with the axis of the expansion chamber angularly arranged thereto. The extinguishing chamber is normally covered with the arc-extinguishing fluid, which may consist of water, or oil or other insulating liquid, the chamber b being usually located completely below the surface of the liquid. The amount of liquid contained in the expansion chamber may be increased by the formation therein of one or more side pockets i (Fig. 2).
