Abstract
381,484. High-tension switches. INTERNATIONAL GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Inc., 120, Broadway, New York, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Allgemeine Elektricitats-Ges. ; 2, Friedrich Karl-Ufer, Berlin.) March 29, 1932, No. 9022. Convention date, March 27, 1931. [Class 38 (v).] The explosion or arc-extinguishing chamber of a switch of the kind in which the break takes place in a conducting or semi-conducting liquid such as water, for example an " expansion " switch consists of ceramic material or glass, which is resistant to hot steam at high pressure, enclosed in an outer metal casing the space between the glass &c. and the metal being filled with a substantially inelastic cement so that the metal casing sustains the full internal pressure. As shown applied to an expansion switch in which the lower switch chamber 3 in which the fixed contact 4 is mounted is integral with an upper expansion chamber 1 with a wide expansion opening, the lower chamber is surrounded by a metal casing 6 in two parts and an inelastic cement 13 fills the space between the chamber and the metal. In a modification, the lower end of the glass switch chamber is open and the chamber is closed by a portion of the outer metal support. The expansion chamber is formed with transverse partitions to act as a water trap. In a further modification, Fig. 3, the upper end of the expansion chamber is of open form and is closed by a bell-shaped glass &c. cover 1a leaving a passage for the expanding gases. The cover is flanged and is bolted down to the outer metal casing.
