Abstract
497,781. Mercury switches. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. March 9, 1938, No. 7364. Convention date, March 11, 1937. [Class 38 (v)] A liquid contact circuit closer comprises two cupshaped metal terminals 1 separated by a diaphragm formed of circular abutting plates 2 and 3 of insulating refractory material which plates have circular holes 8 and 9 eccentrically formed in them. A glass bead 6 hermetically seals the switch which is filled with hydrogen. When the switch is rotated about its horizontal axis, the holes 8 and 9 fall below the level of the mercury 7 in the two chambers formed one on each side of the diaphragm, and allow the mercury to flow through and complete the circuit by joining the mercury 11 in a depression 10 in the diaphragm. The shape of the pool of mercury 10 is such as to aid both the making and breaking of the circuit, by allowing mercury to run out during make and run in during break.
