Abstract

535,956. Oil-blast switches. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., COALES, P. H., GARRARD, J. O., and KEELEY, F. J. Dec. 13, 1939, No. 32133. [Class 38 (v)] The arc formed when the movable contact 4, slidable in a condenser bushing 3, is lifted from a fixed contact 5 in an arc-control device 6 having side vents 12, is extinguished by a flow of liquid, as oil, from a cylindrical chamber 8 through aperture 15 the flow being produced by compressed air supplied at 20. The chamber 8 comprises an insulating part 10 and an upper metal part 9, which is apertured at 16. When the air forces the oil-level down to the latter, air escapes through it, so preventing further lowering of the level. The air-pressure also accelerates the movable contact. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), each break of a conventional double-break oil-switch is thus equipped.
