Abstract
375,308. High tension switches. BRITISH ELECTRICAL & ALLIED INDUSTRIES RESEARCH ASSOCIATION, WEDMORE, E. B., and WHITNEY, W. B. 36, Kingsway, London. March 18, 1931, No. 8331. [Class 38 (v).] Sparking, preventing.-In an A.C. gasblast switch with nozzle contacts as described in Specification 278,764, [Class 38 (v), Electric switches &c.], the contacts are so shaped that when the arc extending between the movable contact and the fixed contact in the region of the least gap tends to move from this region of maximum blast it experiences a restoring force produced by the electrodynamic action on it of the currents in the fixed contact. In the arrangement shown in the Figure, the nozzle contact 1 which has an outer enclosure is provided with a conical internal metal part 3a, screwed into its lower end. The lead-in to the contact is at 4 and the electrodynamic action of the current passing down the upper portion 1 tends to depress the arc drawn between the resilient movable contact 6 and the throat 3 of the nozzle. If, however, the arc impinges on the cone 2 the reaction between it and the upwardly flowing current in the cone lifts it to its original position. In a modification, the inner cone is dispensed with and the current led into the fixed contact both from the top and the bottom. The upper end of the nozzle may be furnished with a downwardly-extending cone so that when the arc impinges on it the direction of approach of the current through the contact is reversed to cause the arc to return. The nozzle and cone may be made up of segments or strips so that when the arc root settles on one of them the current is carried wholly by it and the electrodynamic action is concentrated and localized. Magnetic material may be arranged within the slits to increase the action. The nozzle 1 may be perforated to admit the gas blast to all parts of the arc.
