359,842. Mercury switches. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London.-(Assignees of Moos, F. ; 410, 8th Street, Hoboken, New Jersey, U.S.A.) Feb. 18, 1931, No. 5147. Convention date, Feb. 20, 1930. [Class 38 (v).] A mercury tube switch has an air envelope 1 made of soft lead glass and has electrodes 2, 3 o f chrome-iron alloy which are sealed into the glass by first fusing a bead of lime glass on to the electrode and then fusing the bead on to the lead glass envelope. The electrode 2 is made shorter than the electrode 3 so that the are occurring when the circuit is broken takes place on a pool of mercury and does not damage the glass. The tube is filled with hydrogen or other inert gas.
