Abstract
538,940. X-ray tubes. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd. May 6, 1940, No. 8084. Convention date, May 6, 1939. [Class 39 (i)] The thermionic cathode structure of an X-ray tube is mounted on a portion of the envelope formed of some substance which is a good conductor of heat so that the cathode is cooled by the external air. Fig. 2 shows a spiral filamentary cathode 31 mounted in a block 27 with tubular extension 35 secured to a metal disc 33 which has a rim 21 sealed to the glass 25 of the tube. The cathode leads are held in an insulating clamp 61 and are connected by flexible leads 67 to conductors 81 passing through insulating seals 87 attached to the disc 33. The seal between the rim 21 and glass 25 is protected by a tube 97 secured to the block 27. A modification is described in which the block 27 carries several distinct cathodes and in which the disc 33 and rim 21 are in one piece. A stem 34 secured to the disc 33 may carry the terminals of the tube.
