Abstract

597,577. Discharge lamps. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Oct. 13, 1944, No. 19813. Convention date, Oct. 14, 1943. [Class 39 (i)] The base structure of an electron discharge device such as a fluorescent lamp comprises a metal plate 18, Fig. 1, sealed direct to one end of the vitreous envelope 10 and having an aperture 23 therein through which a lead-in wire 76 extends, a .glass bead 25 fused to the plate 18 around the edges of the aperture 23, a metal contact disc or cap 26 connected to the lead-in wire 16 and fusion-sealed to the glass bead 25, and a well or cavity 14 housing an exhaust tube 21. The glass bead 25 may itself seal the aperture 23; as shown ; alternatively, the glass bead may be in the form of a hollow ring 60, Fig. 11, in which case the contact disc 26 serves to seal the aperture 23. Preferably, in either form, the metal plate 18 has two lead-in wire apertures 23, symmetrically arranged on either side of the well or cavity 14 housing the exhaust tube 21, as shown in Figs. 1 and 11. The envelope 10 may be of circular, elliptical or flattened elliptical cross-section, the metal plate 18 being correspondingly shaped. The metal plate 18 and contact discs 26 may be of the chrome-ironalloy " Alleghany 55." The method of assembly of the base structures is described in detail. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes an arrangement in which the base-plate 63, Fig. 16 (Cancelled), has only one aperture located centrally therein, through which a lead-in wire 65 attached to a contact disc 26 is sealed by means of a glass bead 25. The exhaust aperture 67 is closed by an. exhaust tube tip 68. The electrode 66. may be of the " cold starting " hot cathode type as shown ; when, it is of the hot starting " type requiring two lead-in wires, the second lead-in wire may be connected directly to the base-plate 63. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
