Abstract

615,289. Discharge lamps. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. (General Electric Co.). Aug. 2, 1945, No. 24178/46. Divided out of and addition to 580,539. [Class 39 (i)] In an electric discharge lamp as described in the parent Specification, comprising a glass envelope 10 having an electrode 11 sealed therein by a base structure comprising a metal disc 12 fused to the end of the envelope 10 and a pair of contact members 13 rigidly secured to the disc 12, the ends of the electrode 11 being electrically connected to the contact members 13 of which at least one is electrically insulated from the disc 12, an exhaust tube 14 being sealed in an opening 21 in the disc 12, the opening 21 is formed so that its surrounding wall extends out of the plane of the disc 12 so as to afford protection for the exhaust tube 14 after the latter has been sealed off. The opening 21 is formed at the bottom of frustoconical re-entrant depression extending inwardly into the envelope 10. After the envelope 10 of the device has been evacuated, the exhaust tube is sealed off at 22 so as to lie wholly within the opening 21. One or preferably both of the contact members 13 are insulated from the disc 12 by a glass bead or beads 15 sealed thereto, which are inserted in and sealed to an inturned eyelet or eyelets 16 formed in the. disc 12. The disc 12, contact members 13, and beads 15 are preferably made of materials of matching coefficients of expansion, such as ferrochrome and a suitable soft glass. The disc 12 and envelope 10 may also be of materials of matching coefficients of expansion, such as the chrome-iron alloy " Alleghany 55 for sealing to soft glass or the iron-nickel-cobalt alloy " Fernico " for sealing to hard glass. The disc 12 may be strengthened by circularly embossing it, or by dishing. A similar base disc structure without the exhaust tube may be provided at the other end of the lamp. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 597,577.
