Abstract

452,191. Two-part couplings. BRITISH THOMSON HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. Jan. 24, 1936, No. 2321. Convention date, Jan. 24, 1935. [Class 38 (i)] [See also Group XI] An electric lamp comprises a bulb provided with a base having a central depression therein which increases in diameter towards the interior, and a holder comprises a number of resilient fingers adapted to engage in the depression in the base of the lamp. In the construction shown in Fig. 2, a metal disc 16 is sealed to the edges of an opening in the base of the glass bulb 10, and the disc has a central recess 17 which increases in diameter inwards. The end of one of the filament leads, 12, is looped around the shoulder formed by the recess 17. The other lead, 13, extends through an opening 20 at the centre of the recess into which a glass exhaust tube is fitted, the tube being fused after exhaustion to form an insulating mass 21 around the lead 13. The lamp holder comprises a body portion 22, of insulating material, formed with a recess 28 to contain a resilient metal strip 27 which makes contact with the end of the central lead wire 13 and is connected to one terminal of the holder. The other terminal is connected to a metal disc 23 which is formed with a number of resilient prongs or fingers 26. These fingers snap into the recess 17, and besides making contact with the load 12, hold the lamp in place. A similar holder may be formed on the end of an adaptor which can be inserted in the usual type of lamp holder. The invention may be applied to tubular lamps of the kind described in Specification 428,414, [Group XI]. Metal discs 53, Fig. 8, sealed to the ends of the tubular glass bulb 51, are formed with central recesses 56 similar to those in the discs 16. The lamp holders are formed from sheet metal strips 67 which are provided with resilient fingers adapted to engage in sockets 72. The holders are preferably covered or coated with insulating material.
