Abstract
489,255. Two -part couplings ; electric incandescent lamps. BIRDSEYE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. Oct. 21, 1937, No. 28734. Convention date, Nov. 2, 1936. [Class 38 (i)] [Also in Group XI] In order to enable an electric lamp to be given any desired angular adjustment with respect to the socket in which it is mounted, its metal cap or base is provided with a flexible corrugated intermediate portion 21 between the usual screw-threaded socket-engaging portion 20 and the sleeve portion 22 which is cemented to the glass neck of the bulb. A portion of the leading-in wire 14 between the pinch 12 and centre contact 25 of the cap is wound into the form of a loose helix or, spring to allow for extension when the base is flexed and, to prevent contact between the leading- in wire and the inner wall of the cap, the wire is insulated by beads or by a sleeve 24 of ceramic material, asbestos, glass, or the like. Contact may be further prevented by passing the insulated lead through an aperture in a fibre washer which is threaded upon the exhausting-tube 17 and acts as a spacer. The flexible bellows portion 21 may be formed of copper, and may be coated with insulating varnish; alternatively the flexible portion may comprise a helix of flexible non-resilient wire. In a further modification the flexible portion of the'cap is'insulated from the screwthreaded portion by a ring of fibre or the like to which they are both riveted independently.
