Abstract

489,309. Thermionic valves. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., GIBSON, W. T., and MOSCRIP. W. R. Jan. 25, 1937, No. 2207. [Class 39 (i)] Thermionic valves particularly for use as high frequency rectifiers, comprise a filamentary cathode and a relatively small anode adjacent to and wholly on one side of a portion of the cathode close to a support therefor. Preferably the cathode and anode are supported from opposite ends of the envelope. In the Figure the cathode is a V- shaped tungsten filament 5 supported at its ends by supports 10 from the stem 2 of the envelope 1 and tensioned at its apex by a wire 11 and spring 13 bearing on an insulating block 12 carried by a metal frame 14 secured on the stem by clamps 15. The cathode 6 is a small molybdenum disc mounted adjacent and to one side of the apex of the cathode by a conductor 7 of molybdenum joined to a short rod 8 of tungsten sealed in the dome of the envelope 1 and electrically connected to a cap 9. A cylindrical shield 16 made in two parts is secured around the electrodes and held from the frame 14 by wires 17 engaging flanges 18 on the plates of the shield. The shield is electrically connected either internally or externally of the envelope to one end of the cathode. The anode is spaced from the cathode by a distance of the order of À5 cm. and its diameter is of the same order.
