Abstract

H., 8, Brogden Grove, Brooklands, Cheshire, and ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. Sept. 14, 1933, No. 25498. [Class 39 (i)] A supporting member for a thermionic filament cathode comprises a main body recessed for the reception of an auxiliary body insulated from the main body and having an extension projecting within a hollow stem portion of the main body. the ends of the filament being secured to and supported by the main and auxiliary bodies. In the example shown in Fig. 6, the main body 1 has a stem portion 3 and a lateral extending portion 6 recessed from the axis of the stem portion to receive a similar portion 8 of the auxiliary body 2 which has an extension 5 passing through the hollow stem portion of the main body. The portions 6 and 8 are spaced apart by a metal block 14 and mica insulation 15 and are secured by screws 9 passing through insulating bushings. The block 14 may be replaced by a block of insulating material. Sockets 10 for the filament ends and a support 13 for the bight of the filament are provided. In a modification shown in Fig. 9, the main body 1a has a slot along the axis of the stem portion in which the auxiliary body 2a is disposed. Two filaments, shown in full and dotted lines may be connected in parallel. A cylindrical sheet metal or mesh screen may surround the supporting member to protect it from electrical discharges and an insulating cap may be provided on the upper end of the assembly.
