Abstract
217,013. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., (General Electric Co.). May 8, 1923. High-potential switches; sparking, preventing. -An oil switch has ordinary main and sparking contacts, and, in addition, the main bridging contact is connected with an auxiliary bridge contact which is actuated with the main contact and bridges a pair of auxiliary contacts enclosed in an explosion chamber and connected directly or through inductive or non-inductive resistances with the main fixed contacts. The auxiliary fixed contacts which are on a line at right angles to the main fixed contacts constitute with the auxiliary bridge an auxiliary sparking switch in parallel with the main switch. The main bridging contact 11, which bridges the main fixed contacts 9 and has the usual auxiliary contacts 15 bridging the auxiliary fixed contacts 10, is formed in one with the movable bridge 13 of the auxiliary bridge, the two bridges being at rightangles. Two auxiliary fixed contacts are fixed to the cover by insulators 17 so as to be concentric with the main contacts and on a diameter at right-angles thereto; they are enclosed within explosion chambers 21 and are connected by strap conductors 25, 26, which may be resistances or inductances, to the main fixed contact blocks 8. In breaking the circuit, the pin contacts 24 on the auxiliary bridge leave the fixed contacts and the circuit is finally broken in the explosion chambers.
