Abstract

190,346. British Thomson - Houston Co., Ltd., (General Electric Co.). Nov. 26, 1921. Oil switches; sparking, preventing. - High - potential switches comprise a vessel containing an insulating fluid, for example, oil, formed with two chambers into both of which the arc is drawn at break, the resulting pressure in the first chamber serving to force oil into the portion of the arc stream in the other chamber and extinguish it. The oil vessel 10 is divided into a lower and upper part by the partition 16 which has a conical orifice 15 through which the movable contact-member 14 extends into engagement with the fixed contact 9. Passages 18 in the partition 16 and tubes 20 mounted in the partition connect the oil surrounding an insulating sleeve 17 with that in the upper chamber. When the movable contact is withdrawn into the upper chamber, an arc is drawn with it and the pressure produced in the lower chamber causes a flow of oil through the passages into the upper chamber and across the upperportion of the arc stream. The heated oil and gases are causes to take a circuitous path by the baffies 22, 23 in the upper chamber, and the gases are finally cooled before passing out of the atmosphere through the vent 12 by laysrs of quartz pebbles 25 filling the upper end of the container and retained in place by a perforated plate 26. To prevent the gases escaping around the movable contact, the contact passes through a stuffing-plate which is secured to the insulator 31 and forms the top of a stuffing-box chamber. Specification 184,666 is referred to.
