Abstract

211,009. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., (General Electric Co.). March 6, 1923. High-potential switches; sparking, preventing. -In order to utilize the high interrupting capacity of such liquids as water and the excellent insulating properties of oils, means for interrupting a circuit comprise a number of oilbreaks placed in series with a number of waterbreaks. Thus two arc-extinguishing media are so employed as to utilize their desirable qualities and neutralize their undesirable characteristics. The operating rod 10 carries bridging members 6, 7 for the main and auxiliary movable contacts 8, 9 respectively, the latter engaging fixed contacts 2 in tanks 3 of which one contains water and the other oil, as shown in the Figure. Baffles 15 are supported by insulated rods 16 in such a way as to provide a tortuous passage for any ejected material formed. The water tank has a. discharge and inlet pipe 19 and valve 20, while an opening 21 in the oil tank leads to a chamber 22 containing gravel for cooling purposes. The water-break is arranged to open before the oil-break, and for use at low temperature, glycerine may be mixed with the water.
