Abstract

388,519. Arc-rupturing in switches. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC & MANUFACTURING CO., East Pittsburg, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Dickinson, R. C.; Northwood Apartments, North Street, Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.) Dec. 18, 1931, No. 35110. Convention date, Jan. 24. [Class 38 (v).] In a deionizing arc-extinguishng structure such as is described in Specification 288,326, [Class 38 (v), Electric switches &c.], the deionizing plates 61, Fig. 2, are spaced by sheets of insulation 63, 65, surrounding the annular path 75, around which the arc is rotated, except for through passages 87; 79, extending from the top to the bottom of the structure. The arc formed at the sparking contacts 21, 23, Fig. 1, is transferred to a fixed arcing horn 27 and a movable arcing horn 25, and then from the horn 25 to a fixed arcing horn 29. A coil 35 moves the arc upwards until it is constricted in the ends of V-shaped grooves 69, Fig. 2, in the deionizing places, and broken into a number of short arcs between the plates. The arcs are then whirled round in the annular space 75 formed by the insulating sheets and an insulating ring 131, the sections of the arc in adjacent deionizing chambers rotating in opposite directions. The arc horns 27, 29, Fig. 1, are formed of spaced plates to give a free path for the gases through to the passages 87, 75, 79, 81, Fig. 2. The projection 77 on the insulating plate 65 is so placed that the flow of gas throughthe space 79 is in opposition to the rotating arc. A static shield 149 outside the. deionizing structure equalizes the differences of potential between the plates 61. Fibre plates 137 run parallel to the arcing horns and have inserts of asbestos 139. The laminations of the blow-in magnet 35 are of different lengths along the deionizing structure.
