Abstract
558,668. Gas-blast switches. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. June 15, 1942, No. 8142. Convention date, June 17, 1941. [Class 38 (v)] In a switch wherein the arc drawn is urged by a gas-blast against the edges of spaced, transverse, insulating barriers in an arc chute, the barrier-edges are protected against excessive arc heat by directing there-against an auxiliary jet of pressure-gas, such as air, in opposition to the main blast. Thus refractory barriers are protected against fusing, and barriers of hard fibre or other vaporizable material are protected against erosion and such gas as is produced therefrom is completely burnt in the shoot by the auxiliary air supply. As applied to the switch of Specification 544,017, the barriers 9 are so formed as to provide an air-space 9<SP>1</SP> into each end of which an air-supply from pipe 12 and main reservoir 8 is admitted at 9<SP>11</SP> simultaneously with the main blast through pipe 6. The air escaping from space 9<SP>1</SP> through the slits at the barrier-edges forms a comparatively-cool cushion between the barriers and the arc drawn between the fixed and moving contacts 1, 3. Specification 553,472 also is referred to.
