Abstract
1,085,946. Gas blast switches. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. July 8, 1964 [July 31, 1963], No. 30416/63. Heading H2B. A switching arrangement for interrupting high voltage D.C. includes a pair of separable contacts 1, 2; an electrode 3 and a nozzle 7, the electrode and nozzle being disposed opposing each other across the gap between contacts 1, 2 and the electrode 3 being connected to one of the contacts 2 by way of an isolating switch 4. The circuit connections 5, 6 are made to the fixed contact 1 and electrode 3 so that contacts 1, 2 and the isolator 4 are normally in series. To open the circuit, contacts 1, 2 are separated and a blast of gas from the nozzle 7 blows the resultant arc into a loop towards electrode 3 where it roots, one half of the arc being extinguished; switch 4 is then opened to isolate contact 2. The gas supply to nozzle 7 is then shut off and gas is supplied through a pipe 16 to an insulating helical pipe 11 provided with many nozzles 12. The gas jets from these nozzles blow the arc into a helix 17 which expands into the spaces between the turns of pipe 11 and is eventually extinguished. Two arrangements may be connected in series for higher voltage when the electrode 3 may be dispensed with, the two arcs being blown together until they join up.
