Abstract

1308239 Gas blast circuit breakers BROWN BOVERI & CO Ltd 16 June 1970 [18 June 1969] 29191/70 Heading H1N A gas blast circuit breaker comprises a support insulator 2 having a high pressure gas storage vessel 12 connected by a passage 16 within the insulator to a gas-pressure-maintaining chamber 17 in which a double-ended piston 19, 21 moves, a source of constant pressure 25 acting on the piston face 21. The movable contact 6 is operated by linkage 8 and the blast valve 10 is opened by linkage 13, the gas e.g. SF6 discharging into the switching chamber 4. The constant pressure source 25, e.g. a nitrogen cylinder, now causes the piston 19 to move rapidly to the left, maintaining the pressure in the storage vessel 12 and also operating the switch 27 of the compressor 28 by means of cam 26 carried by the piston rod 20. The compressor draws SF6 from the support 2 and returns it to the chamber 17 until the piston is returned to its equilibrium position, where it switches the compressor off.
