Abstract
1,230,829. Gas blast switches. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. 13 Nov., 1968 [24 Nov., 1967], No. 53770/68. Heading H1N. During closing of a high-voltage switch a resistor is first connected across the contact gap then a second resistor is connected across the first and finally both resistors are shorted out by the contacts closing, the resistors being disconnected during opening of the contacts. In a gas blast switch generally as described in Specification 1,071,905, the rotating bridging contact arm 40 carries an auxiliary contact 53 which during the initial closing movement makes contact with a spring biased arm 54 thus connecting a first series of resistors r 1 across the main gap 40, 44. Further movement of arm 40 causes the arm 54 to be driven into engagement with a further fixed contact 56 thus connecting a second series of resistors r 2 in parallel with r 1 - The total value of resistors r 1 is about the same as the total of r 2 and their value lies between one and two times the surge impedance of the line in which the switch is connected. The movement of arm 54 is damped sufficiently to ensure that when the main contacts are separated with quick action arm 54 is left behind and the resistors are out of circuit during opening.
