Abstract

1,261,592. Arc extinguishing in switches. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 4 June, 1969 [13 June, 1968], No. 28177/69. Heading H1N. In a reclosing high voltage A.C. circuit breaker having a plurality of series connected pairs of main contacts 25, 26, resistors are switched across the main gaps 22, 24 early in the reclosing operation, the effective total value of the parallel resistance being reduced later in the operation and prior to complete reclosure. Resistors 32, 42 may be successively connected across the main gaps 22, 24 by auxiliary switches 34, 40; alternatively parts of resistors 32 inserted by switches 34 may subsequently be shorted by other switches (50, 60) (Fig. 3, not shown); or the main contacts may be closed in two stages (Fig. 4, not shown). The circuit breaker may be of gas blast type as described in Specification 1,131,402 and has a reclosing gear which recloses the contacts within 40 cycles of the A.C. as described in U.S.A. Specification 2,582,027. The initial resistance across the main contacts is preferably between 2À2 and 3À3 times the surge impedance of the line and the reduced resistance between 0À4 and 0À8 times; they are preferably inserted about 2/3 and 1/3 of a cycle of the supply, respectively, before the final engagement of the contacts.
