Abstract

1391106 Arcing preventing D KIND 24 July 1972 [24 July 1971] 34602/72 Heading H1N An A.C. or D.C. current interrupting arrangement has a common capacitor C connected in turn into each of a plurality of "commutating stages" which operate successively to reduce the current to be interrupted. In Fig. 3 the opening of a switch S1 causes an arc voltage which triggers a spark gap TFS1 so that the current is diverted from the switch S1 into the capacitor C which is charged. When the capacitor is charged the current is directed through a resistor R1 and a switch S2. Then the spark at the gap TFS1 is extinguished and the capacitor is discharged through a spark gap TFSe and a resistor Re. Now the switch S2 is opened triggering the spark gap TFS2, causing in sequence the capacitor C to charge through the resistor R<1>, the current to be diverted through resistor R2 and switch S3' the spark at the gap TFS2 to extinguish and the capacitor C to discharge. Then the switch S3 is opened to cause a spark gap TFS3 to spark over, the capacitor C to charge, the current to be diverted through a resistor R3 and the capacitor C to discharge. The three resistors R1 ... R3 are now in series across the open switch S1, the residual current through them being finally interrupted by means not shown. This arrangement may be modified so that the capacitor charged during the opening of one switch is discharged through the next switch, as it opens, in the opposite direction to the current to be diverted, Fig. 5 (not shown). A common "commutating" switch may be used in place of the switches S2, S3 Figs. 10, 11 (not shown). In further arrangements a common capacitor is used in conjunction with two seriesconnected switches which are operated successively, Figs. 6 to 9 (not shown).
