Abstract
1,148,167. Arc-rupturing. ALLMNNASVENSKA ELEKTRISKA A.B. 25 May, 1966 [26 May, 1965; 31 Dec., 1965], No. 23247/66. Heading H1N. An arrangement for facilitating the interruption of current in a high voltage inductive circuit, e.g. a high voltage direct current circuit, comprises in parallel with each other a normally closed auxiliary circuit-breaker 4, a resistor 6 and a " switch element " 5 which can conduct the entire circuit current and has an impedance which varies from a low value when it initially conducts to a very high value in a time which is short compared with the current interrupting time. This arrangement is connected in series with the load R b across a supply source U, e.g. a converter installation with anode reactors of inductance L. To interrupt the current, the circuit-breaker 4 is opened and the switch element 5 is rendered conducting and reduces the current as its impedance increases. The current is transferred to the resistor 6 which may be a non-linear resistor or have a resistance of the order of that of the controlled circuit. Final interruption of the current may be effected by opening a circuit-breaker or isolator 7. The switch element 5 may be gas discharge valve in which the discharge is initiated and controlled by a plasma gun, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), or by changing its characteristics, e.g. by providing a magnetic field or by using an iris type diaphragm. In each case the discharge is changed from a low voltage arc discharge to a high voltage space discharge. The element 5 may be connected in series with a circuit-breaker with voltage dividing capacitors across the element 5 and circuit-breaker, and a capacitor may be connected in series with the resistor 6. Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown). Several resistors 6 in series with capacitors and spark gaps may be used, Figs. 10 and 11 (not shown).
