Abstract

688,720. Arc-rupturing in switches. SIEMENS & HALSKE AKT.-GES. Oct. 27,1950 [Oct. 29 1949; Aug. 7, 1950], No. 26312/50. Class 38 (v) An arrangement for breaking a high-tension D.C. circuit consists in superimposing on section of the line an alternating current derived from the direct current to cause a periodic resultant current flow through zero, and then in opening the line automatically at zero current by a switch or discharge valve. A D.C. source 1, Fig. 1, supplies through lines 3 a consumer 2. To interrupt the circuit a lowpower switch 4 is opened to divert the load current through a circuit comprising a discharge valve 6, Poulsen arc generator 13, 14, and an inductance 8. The arc generator 13, 14, generates A.C. in an oscillatory circuit 17, 18, upon separation of auxiliary valve 6 is reduced to zero and the valve discharge electrodes 15, 16, whereby the current through the ceases and the circuit interruption is effected. A further valve 7 is preferably provided to prevent premature interruption of the oscillations. The frequency of the A.C. is sufficiently low, e.g. 200 cycles/sec., to permit de-ionisation of the valves and prevent recurrence of the discharge. The inductance 8 prevents interference by the A.C. of the D.C. circuit. To ensure that the switch 4 opens on a low voltage, the valves 6, 7, may have low voltage starting electrodes which are initially connected in circuit through a switch 71. Additional valves 19, Fig. 2, may be provided, which are made conducting only when circuit interruption is required, to separate the oscillatory circuit 17, 18, from the D.C. high tension when switch 4 is open. Valve 7 and one of the valves 19 may be structurally united and have a common cathode 197. In order to limit the D.C. to a value which can be reduced to zero by the A.C., e.g. in the case of a short-circuit, a resistance 20 may be connected in circuit by a switch 21; also the appropriate amount of resistance may be automatically connected in by relays.
