Abstract

947,934. Sparking preventing in switches. LICENTIA PATENT VERWALTUNGS G.m.b.H. Nov. 11, 1960 [Nov. 17, 1959], No. 38811/60. Heading H2B. In an A.C. switching arrangement semiconductor triodes 5, 6 are connected in parallel with a circuit-breaker 1 and in series with a second circuit-breaker 4 so as to perform the actual switching operations. During a closing operation circuit-breaker 4 is closed and then switches 2, 3 are closed to energize the grid circuits of the triodes 5, 6 which become conducting to respective half-cycles of current. The circuit-breaker 1 is then closed to take over the current carrying duty. During an opening operation the breaker 1 opens first and the current flows through the triodes 5, 6 until the switches 2, 3 are opened restoring the triodes to the blocked condition. The circuitbreaker 4 is then opened to relieve the triodes of voltage. The intervals in time between the opening of the switches and circuit-breakers 1 to 4 may be very short, allowing the triodes to be loaded in excess of their continuous rating. The circuit-breakers 1, 4 may be designed solely for their respective current carrying and voltage duties without consideration of breaking capacity. Fuses or circuit-breakers may be provided at 7, 8 and 9 to take over the disconnection duty under short-circuit conditions or one of the circuit-breakers 1, 4 may be arranged to perform this function. During a period of frequent opening and closing the switch 4 may remain closed.
