Abstract

828,865. Arcing preventing in switches. VANG, A. April 9, 1957, No. 11504/57. Class 38 (5). An arrangement for preventing or minimizing arcing at switch contacts 13, 19 when a load circuit is opened, comprises a condenser 14, means for charging the condenser and means for discharging the condenser across the switch contacts in opposition to the load current when the contacts are opened. The means for discharging the condenser comprise a transductor or (as shown) a gas-filled triode 18 which is normally non-conducting due to the negative bias applied to the control grid 28 from a bias source 30. The switch blade 13 has an extension 20 which remains in contact with an auxiliary contact 21 when the contacts 13, 19 initially open so that a pulse is applied to the primary winding 22 of a transformer 23 and induces a pulse in its secondary winding 27. This renders the control grid 28 sufficiently positive for the triode to fire and permit the condenser to discharge. The arrangement shown is for D.C. circuits but Fig. 2 (not shown) illustrates a similar arrangement having two oppositely-polarized condensers and two triodes for application to A.C. circuits.
