Abstract

849,240. Sparking preventing in switches. AMERICAN MACHINE & FOUNDRY CO. March 12, 1958 [April 12, 1957], No. 8005/58. Class 38 (5). A rectifier (or rectifiers) 16 having minority carrier storage is in series with a biasing battery 18 across the contacts 12 of a switch in the circuit from a battery 10 to a load 14. When the contacts 12 are closed they complete a circuit for the battery and rectifier which is thus biased in a forward direction. When the contacts 12 are opened the rectifier conducts in the reverse direction for a short period, and prevents arcing across the contacts, but its resistance quickly increases to a very high value. A switch 20 may be included in the rectifier circuit and arranged to close just before the contacts 12 open and to open when the need for arc suppression is past. In an A.C. circuit the switch 12 with the rectifier and biasing source are mounted in a rectifier bridge (Fig. 3, not shown). In Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), the bias is derived from the main supply source by suitable means.
