Abstract
977,656. Glow discharge vessels. ELEKTROPHYSIKALISCHE ANSTALT BERNHARD BERGHAUS. Nov. 29, 1962 [Dec. 1, 1961], No. 45130/62. Heading H2H. To extinguish arcs in a glow discharge vessel 1 two or more capacitors 6, 7 and associated switching devices 2, 3, such as gas discharge tubes, connected in a ring circuit are shunted in turn across the vessel, thus reducing the vessel potential momentarily to zero. The devices 2, 3 may be fired by excessive current through a current transformer 13, low voltage through a potential transformer 18, changes in the spectral composition of the discharge through a photo-cell 20, secondary emission through an auxiliary electrode 23, radio-activity through a Geiger Muller counter, gas pressure through a piezoelectric crystal 27, or changes in gas conductance or pH value, or electromagnetic waves emitted by the arc, or by a combination of two or more of these features. Discharge resistors 4, 5 preferably of at least five times the vessel impedance are provided. Specification 954,799 is referred to.
