Abstract
588,844. Spark-gaps. MEEK, J. M., CRAGGS, J. D., and METROPOLITANVICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Nov. 13, 1944, No. 22394. [Class 39 (i)] [Also in Group XXXV] The time of striking of a spark-gap S used as a spectrographic light source is controlled by an enclosed triggered spark-gap T working in an atmosphere of inert gas and a small proportion of a quenching gas, as described in Specifications 578,510 and 578,514. The prior use of thyratrons, ignitrons or rotating sparkgaps for this purpose is acknowledged. As shown in Fig. 2, the triggered gap may be placed across a condenser C2 charged through resistance R1 from storage condenser C1. When the gap T breaks down, the voltage of condenser C1 is placed across S which also breaks down. C1 may be charged by A.C., as shown, or by D.C. In another form the gap T, Fig. 4, is placed across the supply so that the condenser C1, which charges through resistor R2, discharges through gap T across gap S. The gap may be provided in known manner with an auxiliary low-voltage heavycurrent source of supply, from condenser C2, Fig. 5, which discharges in the form of an arc across the gap S only when this gap has been broken by gap T discharging condenser C1.
