Abstract

824,906. Starting discharge lamps. ENGELHARD INDUSTRIES Inc. April 29, 1958 [Oct. 15, 1957], No. 13645/58. Class 38 (4). In a starting and operating circuit for a highpressure vapour arc lamp, ignition of the lamp 8 is effected by the injection, via transformer 16, of R.F. pulses generated in the spark gap 18 by an A.C. supply from the transformer 10. The primary of the transformer 10 is connected to the lines 2 and 6 and has in series a secondary winding of the transformer 22. When power is connected the volt drop across the resistor 4 is negligible and the transformer 10 receives the full supply voltage. When the lamp strikes, the voltage across the lines 2 and 6 falls and from it is subtracted the volt drop across the resistor 4, the result being supplied to the transformer 10 so that sparks no longer occur in the spark gap 18.
