Abstract

997,139. Ignition systems. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. Nov. 16, 1963, No. 45331/63.. Heading F1B. Ignition apparatus for a gas turbine engine comprises a D.C. supply at 15, 16 which is chopped by a trembler coil 20 to a high voltage unidirectional series of pulses which charge capacitance 20 through halfwave rectifier 27. The capacitor voltage periodically overcomes a series sealed gas filled spark gap 31 to pass current through inductance 35 to a spark plug, or surface discharge igniter 10, which is shunted by a safety resistance 36. A leakage resistance 33 across capacitor 20 is tapped to energize neon lamp 18 which reaches full brilliance immediately before passage of each spark and is thereafter extinguished. Continuous illumination of the neon, indicates a break in the spark circuit, non-illumination indicates failure of the energization circuit.
