Abstract

988,959. Ignition systems. BENDIX CORPORATION. Jan. 2, 1963 [Jan. 12, 1962], No. 298/63. Heading F1B. The invention relates to an ignition system including a storage condenser 29 and a discharge circuit for the condenser including means 51 selectively rendered conductive and non-conductive by a switching arrangement 30 operated in timed relation with the engine. As shown the means 51 comprises a silicon controlled rectifier and the switching arrangement 30 comprises a silicon controlled rectifier 41. When the gate 42 of the silicon controlled rectifier 41 reaches the threshold voltage the rectifier 41 becomes conductive. Thereupon the condenser 49 discharges through the device 41 so as to raise the gate 50 of the rectifier 51 above its threshold voltage and the storage condenser 29 discharges. The time of the spark is automatically advanced upon an increase in engine speed but the way in which the system can be modified to provide fixed timing is described. A modified system, which is powered by a 117 volt alternating current supply, is described.
