Abstract
1334230 Ignition systems JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd 19 April 1971 [29 Jan 1970] 4306/70 Heading F1B In a spark ignition system for an internal combustion engine in which sparks are produced at the plugs 29 of the engine in turn, means are provided, operated under the control of one or more engine parameters, for terminating a spark under engine conditions when a full duration spark is not required for adequate combustion. As shown a switch 33 is arranged to be operated by the inlet manifold depression and closes when the depression has a sufficiently small value such that it is known that a shorter duration spark is sufficient for adequate ignition. The switch 32 is controlled by engine coolant temperature and remains open until the temperature has reached a satisfactory level. When both switches 32 and 33 are closed, then as soon as a spark is initiated the appropriate shield 10 assumes a positive potential and current flows by way of the switches 32, 33 to turn on the thyristor 15 which short circuits the winding 16 and so terminates the spark. The application of the invention to a capacitor discharge ignition system is described.
